'Will you like me?' - Social media workshop - year 5/6
The children in years 5 and 6 were fortunate enough to participate in a Social Media workshop called 'Will you like me?' with staff from the charity Popuk. This was a great chance for them to learn about the positives and negatives of social media and the online world alongside keeping themselves safe online. The day also focused on promoting their own self esteem and happiness both online and off. All of these things were taught through 3 songs which the children learned and performed. They also recorded these and performed them at a parent assembly in the afternoon. The year 3 and 4 children watched this and were also involved in the initial morning assembly. The recorded version of these songs will be made available as a free download and the link will be forwarded to year 5 and 6 parents soon. Many thanks to those parents/ carers who could make it to the assembly, I am sure you enjoyed it as much as we did!
WORLD BOOK DAY at FEJS
Harpist performance for year 5/6
Years 5 and 6 were fortunate this week to have a visiting orchestral harpist come into school to play and discuss her instrument. In advance of her performance on Sunday at St. John's Church alongside our school choir, Eleanor, from the Liverpool Philharmonic, was kind enough to answer some fabulous questions from the questions after performing. Some of the fantastic questions included "Why is it called a harp?", "Where did the harp originate from?", "Why does it need to be so big?", "How do you change a string?", "Does playing it make you calm?" and "Does it hurt your fingers?".
Advent worship
We have begun to learn about Advent in collective worship over these last two weeks. The children have been learning about the Christmas story and the importance and symbolism of the Advent wreath. We have been learning about the first nativity and the belief that Jesus will come again. The children are able to recognise the reasons for the candles and why we have now lit two candles.

On remembrance Sunday some of our pupils went to St Peters to lay a wreath on behalf of the staff, pupils, governors & parents of Fairfield Junior school.
Visit from REV. CARL
We were pleased to welcome back into school our Governor and local vicar, Reverend Carl Edwards, who came into school to talk with the children about his role at St. Peter's Church, Fairfield and in our school. It is always great fun to have Rev. Carl in school and he entertained the children with his guitar playing and showed the children the different robes he wears through the Liturgical year and Ordinary time. We all look forward to seeing Rev. Carl in the near future for his Collective Worships and tea with the Vicar.
Derby university - Primary explorers Day
Inline with our aims to raise aspirations in our school, a number of children from year 5 and 6 were invited by Derby University to attend their Primary Explorers day which introduces children to University life, the Derby campus and a selection of courses. After touring the campus, the children visited different classrooms and lecture theatres whilst undertaking tasks related to subjects they could study and the structure of a university. This was a fantastic day and it is hoped that we will be invited back again to share this experience with other children across year 5 and 6.

School visit from Ruth George MP
Ruth George MP took some time out of her busy schedule to come and visit our school. She spent time touring the different classes before spending an hour with year 5 answering questions written by the children. It was inspiring to see another local person who has achieved great things in her career and the children enjoyed their time with her. She even stopped to sign autographs and spent some time in the staffroom talking to staff before making her way to the Corbar minor injuries unit. We would all like to thank Ruth and hope that she will come and see us again in the near future.
Easter Service - April 2018
On the final day of term we were pleased to be able to welcome so many parents and guardians into St. Peter's church for our Easter service. It was the first opportunity for some children from Miss Mellor's art club to see their work displayed in church and we are assured by Rev. Carl that the parishioners are enjoying seeing the children's work. As always our readers were very strong and capable and it was a lovely way to end the term as a school community.
Year 6 2017 leavers assembly at school
We were sad to say goodbye to our Year 6 pupils at our Year 6 leavers assembly. Year 6 hosted the assembly with readings and prayers before a specially prepared slideshow highlighting their time at FEJS. It was an honour to celebrate our Year 6 children's time with us and we are sure that they will continue to thrive entering into year 7 in their chosen secondary school. Well done to you all; you will be missed.

Our second annual FEJS awards evening was a tremendous success. Following on from its inception last year we once again celebrated the achievements of all FEJS pupils at the end of this incredibly busy year. A huge thank you to all of the parents who attended and who made this such a special event for all involved. A further big thank you must go to the Mayor of Buxton, Councillor Mathew Stone, who helped to make this a very prestigious event.

This year the children gave out their own certificates of achievement to the staff as well as the staff presenting the their awards to the children. As always the children all dressed for the occasion and a wonderful time was had by all. A huge thank you to all the children, staff and especially to Mrs Thyer and Miss Hockram without whom these events wouldn't run.
School Sports Day 2017
Our school sports day was rearranged due to inclement weather but it was definitely worth the wait. The atmosphere was tremendous and our children enjoyed themselves whilst competing valiantly. We concentrated on races this year and this was a definite success with some brilliant performances shown. Everyone joined in and it was a credit to Mr Neequaye whose hard work made this happen. Well done everyone!

Fun in the sun!
While our super new playground equipment was being installed, our children enjoyed the opportunity to play out at break and lunch times in our new, secure grass area. The children loved taking this opportunity to play out on the grass in the sunshine and we look forward to many more similar days over the Summer term.
World Book Day 2017
Our children once again exceeded our high expectations with their costumes for this year's World Book day. We had a multitude of where's Wallys, Harry Potters, Hobbits, Pirates and some other strange creatures. The staff got in on the act too and as you can see even Snow White popped in for a chat with the Governors, Mrs Bramwell and Mrs Flint.
Safer Internet Day 2017
On the 6th of February the whole school engaged in activities centred around 'The Big Picture', this year's Safer Internet Day theme. The focus for this year was on using images online and the potential problems which can occur. The children honed their positive commenting skills, brushed up on their Emoji knowledge, 'Freeze framed' some drama activities and analysed enhanced images. The day was completed by an assembly by our Computing lead, Mr Redman. Many thanks to all staff and children for getting involved.
Monday Mile
Our Monday mile, a national initiative taken up by some schools to raise fitness levels and awareness of health, continues to go from strength to strength. It was another great effort as parents, children and staff braved typical Buxton weather to complete their mile walk. As ever with our children they did this with a smile.
Grandparent's day quiz
We were happy to welcome Grandparents into school again for a quiz. This was very well received and there was something for everyone in the questions. Mr Redman's questions were tricky but Rhys and Ellie-Grace's family won through in the end. A fabulous afternoon was had by all and we can't wait to see the grandparents again.
Paralympian Visit
We were proud and privileged to welcome Michael Churm - Paralympic Sprinter who won Silver at the Sydney Paralympics in 2000 in the 4 x 100m relay. He and the team organised an afternoon of circuit training activities followed by a question and answer session in assembly. Many thanks to him and his team.
Bikeability
A number of our children have successfully completed their bikeability training this week. Bikeability is today’s cycle training programme. It’s like cycling proficiency, but better! It’s about gaining practical skills and understanding how to cycle on today’s roads. Bikeability gives everyone the skills and confidence for all kinds of cycling. We, as a school, feel this is vital training for safeguarding our children on today's busy roads.
Snow-place like school!
Despite the wild and wintry weather, our children and staff braved the elements to arrive, cold but happy, at school. Starting a little later than usual at 10am, the children enjoyed their lessons as normal including the unexpected, but welcome, opportunity to have fun in the snow. All of our children agree, there is SNOW place like FEJS!
Our new member of our school - The Lamb of God
This morning, at break time, our children were delighted to find that a visitor had arrived near our willow tunnel. The new member of our school community is actually an exquisite, detailed carving of a lamb. This was commissioned by Christine McMullen, a valued governor and lay preacher at St. Peter's Church, Fairfield, and kindly donated to the school as a permanent symbol of Jesus' love for us all and our unity, as a school, with St. Peter's Church. The artist, Andrew Frost, was kind enough to stop, answer some questions and pose for photographs with our intrigued children. We love our new addition and wish to thank, greatly Christine, the church and Andrew himself.
Armistice Day 2016 11.11.11
Our annual remembrance service for Armistice day was held at 11am in the school hall and led by Mr Redman and children from 5R. The entire school, pupils and staff observed a full 2 minutes of silence which was, as always, impeccably kept and the children showed respectful interest in proceedings. After the service the children remained in the hall to learn more about the first world war and Remembrance day.
Tea with the Vicar
On Mondays a selected group of children have been meeting Reverend Carl from Fairfield Endowed Junior School for 'Tea with the Vicar'. The group are chosen from interested children from all classes and have the opportunity to discuss topical, church and general information with Rev Carl as well as asking questions regarding his role. This is proving extremely popular and we hope that it continues for the foreseeable future.
Anti-Bullying Week - Assembly by BCS
To help our children protect themselves from bullying we were joined, during anti-bullying week, by 'Anti-bullying Ambassadors' from Buxton Community School. They were touring local primary schools providing advice and speaking on bullying in assemblies. We were fortunate to be first to receive this valuable talk and the girls involved were thanked by staff and pupils for their advice and eloquence. We know that this helped our children and we hope to continue to forge strong links with our local secondary schools.
Derby Cathedral - Democracy visit for School Council
14 pupils from years 4,5 and 6 visited Derby Cathedral on Tuesday 15th November to meet Bishop Alistair - who is a 'Lord' in the House of Lords! Bishop Alistair discussed a day in the life of a MP and the 'Modern Slavery Act. The children then held a mini-debate on, "Should a weekly sugar tax of £2.50 be introduced to children?" Everyone thoroughly enjoyed this experience and the School Council then led an assembly back at school which fitted perfectly with our week's theme of Rules and Laws.
Our Wonderful World - Wonderful Technology
As part of our Collective Worship theme 'Creation - Our wonderful world', Mr Redman, our computing co-ordinator and year 5 teacher showed the children some of the wonderful things that we are doing with the technology we have in school.
Starting with immersive virtual worlds the children were amazed at the way augmented reality could be used to create immersive 3d displays from 2d images and posters. They particularly enjoyed seeing the inside of the Tardis spring to life from a regular picture.
We have included a sneak peak for you of just what augmented reality can achieve (this is a standard £10 note as seen through the ipad and augmented reality app).

Awards Evening July 2016
We are very proud to have hosted our first annual school awards evening. It was a great success and we are very grateful for the huge turnout for both lower and upper school celebrations. It was wonderful to see so many children gain awards and it was indicative of all the hard work put in over the year. All of our children are winners and have achieved in their own way. Mrs Johnson's choir and Mr Redman's guitar group performed at both ceremonies and the children did brilliantly, performing confidently and with skill. Mr Neequaye presented sports awards to the children who have excelled both within school and representing our fabulous school. A huge thankyou to all the staff and volunteers and to all the children and families who made this such a fantastic event. We can't wait to showcase all of our successes again next year.
Leavers Church Worship - Y6 - 2016
It has come to that time of year where we once again say a sad goodbye to our Year 6 cohort. We have been proud to have taught these children and trust that they will look back fondly on their time at FEJS, as we look fondly on them. We are sure that they will achieve great things in the years to come and hope that they will come back and share their achievements with us. You have been a fantastic year group. Well done and good luck!

Year 6 Clarinet concert
Our Year 6 classes have been learning to play the clarinet this year and this was their end of year concert. Thankyou to all the families who came to watch and we hope that you enjoyed it as much as we all did. The children have worked extremely hard to learn this challenging instrument and it was a pleasure to see them perform.
NB: If the video runs poorly please pause it for a couple of minutes to allow it to buffer then try pressing play again.

End of term dance show
During this term a number of children from across all 4 year groups have been involved with an after school dance class. The children all committed fully and learned a great dance routine based on Oliver! We have been thrilled with the numbers partaking in dance this term and the results were truly stunning! We look forward to the next one.
The lion, the witch and the wardrobe show
We were very fortunate to welcome year 2 pupils and staff from Fairfield Infant School to watch a performance of The lion, the witch and the wardrobe. This was an enthralling performance by an outside theatre group which the children enjoyed enormously.
Visit by Christine McMullen, Governor & Lay Preacher at St. Peter's Church, Fairfield
We were fortunate enough to be visited by Mrs Christine McMullen, School Governor and Lay Preacher at St. Peter's Church, Fairfield to discuss her recent visit to Windsor Castle to receive Alms on Maundy Thursday from the Queen and Prince Philip.
Mrs McMullen regaled the children about her visit and explained the history of the 'Maundy Money'. She passed around the actual coins she received which fascinated the children.
We even got an unexpected visit from the Queen (Miss Hockram!) and Prince Philip (Mr Pace) which excited and amused the children no end. A huge thankyou to Mrs McMullen and our great friends at St. Peter's Church, Fairfield.

Anti-bullying Workshop
Yesterday the entire school including teachers and all pupils took part in a Anti-bullying workshop. This was led by the Take Away Theatre Company and encompassed a drama presentation followed by upper and lower school group work and activities. The overriding consensus from all involved was that this was a enjoyable and thought provoking way of approaching the topic of bullying. This has been the catalyst for the development of our new anti-bullying policy and guidance for parents and children.
